In December 2010 I hurt my shoulder and went to my doctor. He thought that I had a rotator cuff injury so he sent me for an x-ray.
The x-ray showed nothing as expected. I was still in pain so he sent me for 8 weeks of physical therapy. I got some relief but still had pain. So my doctor sent me for a MRI.
Cigna declined to pay because I hadn't had an X-ray or physical therapy prior to the MRI request. WHAT ??? They paid for it. Literally 5 months went by with me in pain and my doctor and his assistant trying to convince Cigna that I needed the MRI.
Finally we decided that I should go to a specialist. He immediately sent me for a MRI, which Cigna paid for and I was scheduled for rotator cuff surgery within 2 weeks.
So Cigna paid for 5 unnecessary doctor appointments, medication and a lot of back and forth just to prove that my doctor was correct. What is wrong with this picture?
